ERA Gallery is thrilled to announce our first artistic residency program at our Milan gallery, for our Los Angeles based artist Katja Farin.
Located in the heart of Milan’s most medieval district, Brera, ERA Gallery seeks to host a space for reflecting on the rich artistic past of Italy, with a view to that past providing a fuel for the future. No artist in ERA Gallery’s roster proves better positioned to do so than Katja Farin, whose solo-show “Growth in Absence” marked the gallery’s inauguration in 2021, followed by "Soft Exit," an exhibition of works on paper with accompanying artist's book published soon thereafter. Born in 1996, Farin lives and works in Los Angeles. They received a BA in Fine Art from the University of California, Los Angeles in 2018 and have since actively exhibited their paintings and drawings in solo shows including “Growth in Absence” and “Soft Exit” at ERA Gallery in Milan, “Hum of Virtue” at in Lieu Gallery, Los Angeles, 2021, and “Lines From Arguments,” at Lubov NYC, New York, 2020.
Farin’s work explores the past through drawing its emotive language from the richest exponents of expressionism, Max Beckmann, Edvard Munch, R.B. Kitaj, and Édouard Vuillard among others, without failing to use said language to consider very modern problematics of anxiety, social isolation and economic precarity endured by contemporary generations. This exploration of the general conditions of today's youth is then intensified by Farin's considerations of gender identity, stemming from their own experiences with gender-affirming procedures and transitional acts.
In hosting Katja Farin in the history-steeped surroundings of Milan, as well as bringing them to visit Italian master painters such as Felice Casorati and Piero della Francesca, ERA Gallery seeks to enrich their catalogue of art historical reference, while also concurrently enriching Italy’s demographically youngest city with the freshness of Farin’s utterly contemporary perspective. This push and pull of past and present, youth and age, masculine and feminine (or indeed the lack thereof), stylistically inspired towards instensity and melancholy by their Italian surroundings, encapsulates the mood of Farin's body of work in this period of residency.
The artist will host an open studio event on the 23rd of June, from 2pm to 7pm at the gallery in Via Palermo 5.
